Cheaha State Park is the oldest continuous-operating state park in Alabama, opening in 1939. It is located on Mt. Cheaha, the highest point in the state at 2407', a few miles south of Anniston. There are two campgrounds, cabins, a lodge and a restaurant.

We stayed at the Mountain Top CG, just a few feet from the summit of Mt. Cheaha. We arrived on a Thursday afternoon and no problem finding a site; here we are on site 27.

    Date of visit: Mar 2009

About half of the 43 sites are pull-through sites, such as 30-33 shown here.

Sites 1-2 are back-in sites; neither is very level. In general, Cheaha strikes one as an older park, perhaps in need of some updating. A big improvement would be to make sites more level and put down a good layer of gravel. That would help eliminate the mud we encountered during our rainy visit.

Pull-through site 7 has been modernized a bit with some curbing and gravel.

    Sites 6, 11 and 12 are large back-in sites.

There are two bathhouses in the campground. Both are a bit dated, but were clean and provide free hot showers.

Cheaha's main claim to fame is its being at the highest point in Alabama, 2407'. Right atop the summit is the stone observation tower, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's. From the observation deck, one has a great view of the surrounding hills and countryside.
