  • Lake Jackson City Park, AL

     florala01

Despite the sign, this is no longer a state park. In October 2015 the state of Alabama closed 5 state parks, including Florala. The city of Florala stepped in and assumed ownership and operation of the park. We were here just 4 weeks later. The city council just voted to rename the park Lake Jackson Park, but the signs have yet to be replaced.

The park is located on the northeast side of Lake Jackson and is conveniently located within walking distance of downtown Florala with its shops and restaurants. The campground is small with only 28 sites, each with full hookups.

We had made a reservation with the state about two months ago and interestingly they never called to tell us about the closing - the first we knew was when we arrived. There were plenty of available sites and we chose site 6, a waterfront site. A very pleasant spot with some sun, some shade and a great view of the lake.

    florala03
Site 12 is at the end of the row of waterfront sites and is quite private.

    florala04
Site 13 is another private site.

    florala05
These sites, 11-5, are all back-in sites along the lake shore.

    florala06
Site 15, to the left, is the only pull-through site in the park. To the right is a short back-in site, 14.

    florala07
    Sites 16 (r) and 17 (l).

    florala09
    Sites 18-20.

    florala10
    Sites 1-4 are waterfront sites.

    florala12
Near the entrance to the campground are eight sites that are quite close together. These are sites 24-28.

    florala13
Beside the little office are sites 21-23.

The bathhouse is a bit dated, but Abbie, the city's new park manager, keeps it and the rest of the campground in neat shape. Beside offering free hot showers, the bathhouse also has 2 washers abd 2 dryers, a dollar a load.

    florala08
Behind site 7 is this fishing pier.

    florala15
A mile-long walk and bike path, paved and with a long wooden boardwalk, wends along the shore of the lake into town.

    florala18
Just about every night we were here we enjoyed beautiful sunsets across the lake.
