    Sand Pond Recreation Area

     sand pond01

Sand Pond CG is a small campground located in the Pine Log State Forest near Ebro. It has 20 hookup sites, half of which are on the shore of a small fishing pond. Nearby are 4 primitive camping sites where RV's are not allowed.

This is one's first view of the pond and camping area on the far side. There's a fishing pier that extends out into the pond; it even has a roof for those hot summer days.

We got here on a Thursday morning before a three-day weekend. State parks were all booked solid, but since Sand Pond does not accept reservations, we figured we'd be in good shape. And we were - plenty of sites to choose from. Site 8 overlooks the pond through the pines. Amazingly, I was able to get an excellent satellite TV signal between the trees using the roof-top antenna; I had been certain I'd have to set up the portable dish.

Site 4 is a small site across the road from the pond. It's really suitable for tents, vans or pop-ups.

    Site 2 overlooks the pond.

Sites 11 and 12 also have a view of the pond.

Here is site 15, located past the point where sites are near the pond.

There's a small, clean bathhouse with free hot showers.

About a mile from the main campground, in an area called Hagar Landing, are three primitives sites. This is site 1, which requires a walk of a few hundred feet from your car. RV's are not allowed at these sites.

    Primitive site 2.

    sand pond16
Primitive site 3. Due to recent heavy rains, the campsite is very close to being flooded.

There are miles of hiking and biking trails through the forest, some of them accessible from the campground. One of the shorter trails is a 2 mile loop around the campground and two ponds, one of which is in the middle of a large cypress grove.
