Colfax RV Park is a small park located at Lock and Dam #3 on the Red River in Colfax, LA, about 20 northwest of Alexandria. The park was developed about 12 years ago by the Red River Water Commission.

I had recently found Colfax Park during my research of public campgrounds and it looked like it would be a great place to visit. We were not disappointed. We had called a couple of days before our planned visit and made a reservation (no extra charge for that). We were on site 13 on the outside of the camp loop.

    Date of visit: March 2014

These are sites 15 and 17. All the sites here are out in the sun; the park has planted a lot of trees that in time will provide some welcome shade. It's certainly easy to set up a satellite dish here.

Sites 12, 14 and 17 are on the inside of the loop.

Sites 19-20. All sites here are back-in sites.

    Sites 21, 23 and 25.

Sites 3 and 5 are in the foreground, with 4, 6 and 8 in the background across the road.

If you have young children with you, site 25 would be a good choice, for it is right beside the play area.

The parks boasts a modern bathhouse, clean and with hot showers. It also has a small laundry room with a washer and dryer - free, no less!

That's site 22 just to the left of the bathhouse.

Adjacent to the campground is a large day-use area with a boat ramp, picnic areas and restrooms.

The park is located along the bank of the original river bed, now a pool since the building of the lock and dam in 1992.

One can walk or drive out along the dam to the Control House for the Lock and Dam. We had been told at the campground office that visitors were welcome, so we walked out one morning, knocked on the door and sure enough, the friendly crew invited us in and gave us a tour of the control room, complete with a demonstration of the lock operates.

Moored alongside the lock was this Corps of Engineer tug and barge, used for river maintenance.
