The campground is out on the open plains with no shade trees. The CG does not accept reservations; we had no problem finding a site at the time of our mid-June visit. Here we are on site 15.

    Date of visit: Jun 2008

This gives you an idea of the openness of the campground. Each site has a small shade shelter over the picnic table.

    badlands05
The 96 sites are fairly evenly-split between back-ins and pull-offs by the side of the road. The back-ins are fairly short - even our 23' rig was really too big.

Due to the extreme danger of prairie-grass fires, open camp fires are not permitted.

One of three bathhouses in the CG - no showers.

This was the first automated Iron Ranger we've encountered - no more filling out an envelope and dropping it in the slot. Here you pay with either credit card or cash.

All afternoon we had been watching building storm clouds to the west over the Black Hills, where a tornado watch was issued.

    badlands16
As the storm moved to our south, the sun re-appeared and lit up the hills against the dark clouds.
