Goliad State Park is located on the outskirts of Goliad TX, within walking distance of the Presidio la Bahia, site of a massacre far worse than that at the Alamo. There are two campgrounds in the park: one is a very pleasant loop with grass and some trees, the other is essentially a paved parking across the highway from the main part of the park.

We arrived on a Wednesday about noon and there were several sites available for that night, but nothing beyond that. We chose site 10 in the Karankawa Loop, the more pleasant of the two camping areas.

    Date of visit: Feb 2012

There are five sites with screened shelters with a picnic table inside and with hookups outside. The parking spots at these shelters are only large enough for cars and vans, or perhaps a small pop-up camper.

The bathhouse was fairly modern, clean and heated, and offered free hot showers.

Across the road from the main part of the park is the Jacales camping area with 24 back-in sites. These are 21-26.

Sites 27-38 are along a median down the middle of the lot.

    goliad09
Sites 39-44. The sites on the outside edges of the lot have picnic pavilions behind them; the pavilions for the sites in the middle are down at the end of the lot.

Located near the park office is theMission Nuestra Senora Del Espiritu Santo de Zuniga, built in 1749 and restored by the CCC in the 1930's.

A half-mile walk from the park is the Presidio la Bahia, site of the Goliad Massacre in March 1836, just a couple of weeks after the Alamo. Col Jame Fannin and 341 men under his command were ordered killed by General Santa Anna a week after they had surrendered.

It's worth a stop to visit the historic downtown area of Goliad, dominated by the court house in the middle of the square.
