Allis SP is a small out-of-the-way gem of a park, located atop a hill in Brookfield VT, a little south of Montpelier and Barre. One climbs a steep hill on a good gravel road about a mile, to an elevation of 2000'.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that the park has a few sites out in an open grassy area; most VT parks we've been to are quite dark in the woods. Site 15 suited us just fine.

Site 18 is another of the sunny sites to choose from.

    allis19
And a few more sunny ones: 17a, 17, and 16.

    allis20
Site 2 is much more typical of VT state parks - well-shaded. This is is also quite private.

    allis21
Site 1 is a smaller site that still has a little sun.

    allis23
Site 5 is the only pull-through site.

    allis25
Campers can also stay in one of 8 lean-to shelters.

While on our walk around the campground, we spotted this bruin taking a slow stroll along the road.

A short walk from the campground takes you to this former fire lookout tower. It is in excellent condition and you can climb to the top, from which you have a fantastic panorama of the mountains. I was even able to pick out Mt Washington, off in neighboring New Hampshire.

I spent about an hour and a half up in the tower at sunset, which cast an interesting shadow of the tower on the trees.

    Sunset over the Green Mountains.
