Pocahontas State Park is located south of Richond, VA, not too far from I-95. We first stayed here several years ago while exploring the Civil War battlefields in the area. There are several miles of hiking and mountain biking trails within the park It's a large campground with 169 sites.

We arrived on a mid-November weekday and had our choice of almost any site in the park. We chose 79 for it's sunny location.

    Date of visit: Nov 2007

There are two main camping loops; we were in the second loop with sites numbered from 66 to 129. This loop is more open and sunny than the first loop with sites 1-65. Here is site 97.

Both loops have a few pull-through sites - here is 76 on the left. All sites have E/W hookups, and there is a dump station available.

An interesting feature of the park are the few Buddy Sites, comprised of 3 sites close together. These would be great for several families to share.

The kids would have a great time riding their bikes around all the paved campground roads This shows sites 114 and 115 in the foreground with Buddy Sites 111-113 in the background.

More of the pull-through sites, 67 and 66, with the Camp Store in the background.

Site 44 shows the more wooded setting of sites in the first camping loop.

The bathhouses here rank among the best we've ever seen. The showers are in individual rooms, and the entire building was amazingly clean.

It was a gorgeous fall afternoon when we arrived, with a temperature of 75 degrees! We took a very pleasant walk through the woods down to a so-called beaver dam.

    pocahontas15
Here's the dam. Somehow I'm not convinced that this is a genuine beaver dam.

Fall colors were at their height.

    Beaver Lake.

Not too far from the dam is this Civilian Conservation Corp museum. Unfortunately, it wasn't open when we were there.
