Alfred B. Maclay Gardens SP, FL |
Maclay Gardens SP is located on the north side of Tallahassee, just a mile from I-10. Alfred Maclay bought the property in 1923 and began a 21-year process of planning and developing the extensive gardens overlooking Lake Hall. After his death in 1944, his wife Louise continued to expand the gardens. In 1953 she donated what was then known as Killearn Gardens to the state. |
Upon entering the gardens, you begin a short walk along the shore of Lake Hall. Along the way, there's a gazebo on the lake shore, some large live-oaks festooned with spanish moss and lots of flowers...
...such as these camellias.
At the end of the brick walkway is the Maclay home, open to the public January through April each year.
One of the stipulations in the bequest to the state was that each and every day when the house is open, fresh camellias be cut and displayed.
