  •  Maine in September - It's Wonderful !

We always love a trip to Maine in the sunny, cool month of September. After Labor Day there are no crowds or traffic, and we can have our pick of campsites. The foliage was just starting to turn to reds and yellows while we were there in 2007.

For pictures and comments of all the campgrounds we visited, click on "Campground Reviews" in Top Menu or on the links in the journal.

Maine07 (10) In this view from the Owls Head Lighthouse, we see a schooner heading out of Rockland harbor with Mt Battie in the background.
Not even a year old is the new bridge over the Penobscot River at Bucksport. It opened in Dec 2006, and boasts the country's first observation deck in a bridge tower, 42 stories above the water. Within the left tower is Maine's highest and fastest elevator.  Maine07 (32)
Maine07 (33) Looking up the Penobscot River from the observation deck, one can just barely make out Mount Katahdin, just to the right of center.
One also gets a great aerial view of Fort Knox, nearly 20 years under construction, starting in 1844.  Maine07 (36)
Maine07 (38)   As soon as the state can allocate enough money, the old bridge will be demolished.
Southwest Harbor, on the southwest end of Mt Desert Island.  Maine07 (42)
Maine07 (44)   Plenty of the rock-bound coast of Maine to enjoy. This is along the natural seawall near the southenmost tip of Mt Desert Island (MDI). We stayed at the nearby Seawall Campground in the park.
The tide is just about high as dusk starts to settle in .  Maine07 (46)
Maine07 (59)  Looking across from Bernard to Bass Harbor.
We were blessed with great weather for most of our visit - just one day was it foggy. But even then scenes such this at Northeast Harbor are still beautiful.  Maine07 (70)
Maine07 (73)  The church in West Trenton is about to get a new steeple.
Now this is about as big as government ought to get - the Selectmen's office in Somesville, on MDI.  Maine07 (76)
Maine07 (78)  Sure looks like New England to me. This was in Somesville.
The Schoodic Peninsula is a part of Acadia National Park which doesn't get quite as much traffic as MDI. This is looking across Frenchman Bay to Mt Cadillac. Maine07 (81)
Maine07 (87)  The fall colors were getting brighter as our trip came closer to its end. This was at Lamoine State Park near Ellsworth.
Shortly after sunrise at Lamoine State Park. Maine07 (109)
Maine07 (113)   On our way back down the coast, we got a different persepctive of the new Penobscot River bridge and Fort Knox from downtown Bucksport.
What better end to a great trip than this sunset at Lamoine State Park.  Maine07 (98)
