roosevelt ms01

Roosevelt State Park is located about 30 miles east of Jackson, MS, just off I-20 near the town of Morton. This is a full-feature park with two campgrounds with a total of 109 FHU campsites, a lodge with banquet facilities, a performing arts center, and a waterslide and pool. The R.O. Hannah Campground is on the east side of the lake near the lodge, while the CCC Campground is on the west side of the lake.

We arrived on a mid-March Wednesday with no reservation. Not a problem - lots of sites to choose from. We selected site 14, a pleasant water-front site in the R. O. Hannah Campground. Unlike the CCC Campground on the other side of the lake, water-front sites are not considered Premium sites with a higher cost. This campground wasn't as busy and thus was quieter - quiet is good!

So let's take a walk around the campground and look at a few sites. This is site 5, a back-in site with a view of the lake down through the trees.
roosevelt ms40
Site 12 is a pleasant site overlooking the lake.

roosevelt ms04
Sites 19 and 17. All the sites here have cement pads. While some are reasonably level, a good number slant one way or another.

roosevelt ms35
Site 21 sits by itself in a hollow.

roosevelt ms05
The site in the foreground is 22, while beyond it is 23.

roosevelt ms08
Located in a small cul-de-sac are sites 27 and 28.

roosevelt ms07
One of the nicest sites on this side of the lake is 29. It is located at the end of the road, is quite private and has a great view.

roosevelt ms36
Site 37 is the only pull-through site in the park. To use it, however, you have to go the wrong way around the camp road.

roosevelt ms33
There are two bathhouses on the east side. I was surprised that this small one had room for showers. The larger one also has a washer and a dryer - $1.00 a load for each.

roosevelt ms10
By road it's about two miles around the lake to the CCC Campground. But there is a trail around the north end of the lake which is a lot shorter. It passes through a primitive tent camping area. Not much here other than a water faucet and a Porta-Potty.

roosevelt ms26
Continuing along the trail we end up at the CCC Campground. Here are sites 46, 47 and 49.

roosevelt ms25
Site 49 struck my fancy as the nicest site on this side of the lake.

roosevelt ms24
Sites 50-55.

roosevelt ms20
There are two crossroads down the hill in the middle of the campground. On this one are sites 71-77.

roosevelt ms17
If you have a boat and/or like to fish, site 82 would be a perfect choice with a small dock right behind it.

roosevelt ms13
Sites 89, 91 and 93 are all back-in sites across the road from the lake. A nice view through the windshield.

roosevelt ms12
Sites 95 and 94 are among the Premium waterfront sites on the west side of the lake. There is no senior discount for these sites.

roosevelt ms18
Sites 98-103 are farthest from the lake.

roosevelt ms11
Sites 104-109. One of the bathhouses is in the middle of this row on the right.

roosevelt ms32
Returning from the CCC Campground, I was passed by these bikers. The trails are a bit of challenge with lots of gullies and swampy areas.

roosevelt ms14
On the east side of the lake is a water slide and a swimming pool. For lake swimming, you need to go to the west side beach.

roosevelt ms41
There are several fishing docks along the lakeshore. Across the inlet is the day-use area.
