Oct 2015: Back again - a great spot for an overnight stop. We made our usual walk over to Nick's Pizza for supper, but did not have the pleasure of an after-dinner ball game as we did last year. Too bad, as it was a beautiful evening.
We stopped here again in the spring of 2016 on our way back north and rolled in on a Sunday afternoon just in time for about 6 hours of softball right in front of us.
We've been stopping here for several years, but have never seen the Maury River as high as this at the time of our 2011 visit.
We were about ten days later last year (2010) than usual, and the trees had really burst forth with green. As usual, we picked a spot in the rally field, this time beside the tennis court. We walked to Nick's Pizza for dinner and when we got back to the park, we sat by the ballfield and watched a pick-up softball game.
Here we are at sunset during our visit in 2009, parked on one of the rally sites near the ball fields. We like the open space of this area.
The rally field can hold up to 250 rigs, but there are only perhaps 40 or so W/E(30A) hookups.
Setting up the satellite dish in the open field is a breeze.
The main campground, with 52 sites, is located near the top of a hill behind the athletic fields and office. The sites are on the hill-side, but most are reasonably level. There are two loops of sites, each with a bathhouse. This is the upper loop.
All sites offer W/E (30A) hookups.
Here we're looking down the road toward the lower loop.
Along with a bathhouse, the lower loop also has a large picnic pavilion.
This shows one of the pavilions down in the day-use area, with the tennis courts just beyond.
Behind the park is Vista Links, an 18-hole golf course.
Up on top of the hill near the CG is this Olympic-sized pool.
The Paxton House is located near the athletic fields. Built in 1831, the house was purchased by the city in 1968. The Paxton House Historical Society is raising funds with which to restore the house to its former glory.
Another interesting artifact is this former Norfolk & Western caboose, # 555022. It's located behind the Paxton House.
For rail fans, the Norfolk Southern passes by the park, just across the river.
In the category of "you see the darndest things", this ladder truck appeared late in the afternoon, to train some new guys on the ladder.
