Shenandoah National Park, VALoft Mt CampgroundDuring the years we lived in Maryland, Loft Mountain Campground, up on the Skyline Drive north of Charlottesville, VA, was our "favoritest" place for escaping the bustle of life around Washington DC. It's a large, first-come/first-served campground located high atop Big Flat Mountain (the real Loft Mt is the next mountain over). No hook-ups, but fresh water, a dump station, hot pay showers and a camp store are available. 219 mostly-shaded sites are spread out along several loops of paved roads; most are quite private. Two waterfalls and trails into the Big Run Wilderness Area are nearby; the Appalachian Trail runs through the campground. |
